Saturday Morning
Ahhh, Saturday morning!!
It’s 8 a.m. I have coffee. My two boys are still sleeping. Life is good.
That doesn’t mean that life isn’t good amid the chaos and disruption that two boys (or two girls, or ten boys or . . . well, kids) cause, but just to have a couple of minutes alone is not a bad thing sometimes.
It’s been a crazy week. I think mid-May is about the time when the holiday season is officially over and folks at school are realizing that they have to get a whole lot of knowledge into kids’ heads before the end of June. Of course, that throws the whole family dynamic over a cliff. I’m trying to plan end-of-the-year activities at school (my own fault for volunteering back in September!), my younger son is getting ready to go to middle school, and my older son is gearing up for high school. (My husband is always crazy at work, so we’re just used to that by now.) Each of those milestones causes an incredible amount of stress on bodies and schedules.
My older son is especially sensitive to this. There’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t burst into the house at the end of the school day complaining about how someone else is getting to do something and he’s not, how the lunch ladies were mean to him, how the vice principal yelled at him for NO GOOD REASON!! (Those capital letters do a pretty good job of capturing his frustration – and mine sometimes when I have to listen to it all afternoon.)
So anyway, I really relish these few calm minutes. No hormones, no stress, no “. . . but Mom, you said three days ago that I could use your computer!” whining. Just me, my coffee, the newspaper and . . . that little creak at the end of the hall that tells me my quiet time is over.
