Procrastination
How much longer can I wait to cure procrastination?
We are officially three days into our summer vacation, and I am officially running out of time.
It was a rough run to the school finish line. On the last day of school, my son asked to be driven to school 45 minutes early to do some extra credit work in science. I guess he slacked a little during the last term and was forced by his own conscience to work right down to the wire to save a grade. Yes, I am proud of him for caring about the difference between a B and a B+, but that sort of set the tone for the whole summer, I’m afraid. Once again, he was able to wait until the last possible second to get by.
I started the vacation by asking my boys to clean their rooms (which haven’t been touched since sometime back in 2006, I think.) Of course, I had to hear about how unfair I am, and that they will clean tomorrow because they have all summer, and blah, blah, blah . . .
I am not wiling to wait until the last day of vacation to let the boys clean, nor am I willing to let them wait until the last day of vacation to do any of the other things that they are responsible for this summer (reading a book, completing a math packet, getting into better physical shape.) I guess I’m a mean, cruel mother, but it comes from having been an extreme procrastinator throughout my own life. I am the kind of person who will figure out exactly how long a project will take, and then subtract that time from the deadline to figure out when I will start. I have been bitten in the butt by my procrastination on a few occasions, but worse than that, I have been under constant stress for most of my life. I do not want my children, and especially my prone-to-stress oldest, to be saddled with that kind of weight, so I’m going to have to be mean to save them.
I’m hoping that if I start now, I’ll be able to help the boys overcome their “wait until the last minute” habit before they go off to college and it’s too late. Come to think of it, this may be the first time in my life that I didn’t wait until the last minute to act – maybe we’re all on the right road.
