Pants on Fire
Today’s particular blog is not about being the mom of a child with autism. It’s about being the mom of a teenager. Those of you with teens will totally know what I am talking about. Those of you whose children haven’t gotten there yet – it’s coming.
If I told my 14-year-old son that his pants were on fire, he would do one of two things.
-
1.) He would examine the flames coming out of his pants, roll his eyes at me and say “Mom, they’re supposed to be like that,” followed by an annoyed sigh and immediate departure from the room (where he would, of course, extinguish the flames) or:
- 2.) He would tell me that his pants are NOT on fire, and that I should get off his case and leave him alone because my whole goal in life is to point out his flaws and I should get a life of my own and leave him alone. (After this speech, he would leave the room and extinguish the flames.)
I just have to keep reminding myself that I love him and that someday, he will appreciate my wisdom, just as I appreciate my parents’ wisdom now that I am a parent. (I’m sure Mom and Dad’ll read this and laugh themselves into a frenzy over it!)
