Now THAT’s Crazy!

The octuplet mom is crazy!

I know – everyone’s weighing in these days on Nadya Suleman and her eight new babies and whether it was the right or the wrong thing, and if the doctors should have talked her out of it or not allowed it.  That’s not why I think she’s crazy.

I think she’s crazy because she already had SIX kids!  And three of them have disabilities!

If you’re reading this, you probably already know how tough it is to raise one child with a disability.  Regardless of what kind of disability your child may have, it adds a whole new dimension (or two or three!) to the already-difficult job that parenting is.

Most people, when they picture their future children, don’t tend to think of them as needing anything more than love and a couple other basics – food, clothing, shelter.  But having a child with special needs makes you, the parent, have to completely rethink what being a parent is. It’s more than just loving your children.  More than keeping them fed and clothed.  More, even, than raising them to be the best they can be.  It’s a constant dance in which you’re dressed in questions and swirled around by exhaustion, exhilaration and information – sometimes, more than you need.

Many people love large families – Nadya clearly seems to be one of those people.  I hope she finds the help she needs, both for her 14 children and for herself.

I hope she finds the help also! I am constantly looking for help and I only have 2 kids. One has AS/ADHD and the other has ADHD. I have a supportive husband, a circle of good friends, my kids are in excellent schools, and I still need more help! Whew! So good luck Nadya, I am praying for you and your kids. Even so called “normal” kids can have big problems too.
