Student of the Month

My child will never be student of the month.

Oh, he should be. He works his butt off every day. Not only does he do his homework, manage to get As and Bs on his report card, participate in extracurricular activities and treat others with respect, but he does it all while carrying Asperger’s Syndrome around on his back like a really heavy extra backpack.

He’ll never be student of the month, though, because he’ll never be one of those kids that gets noticed. He doesn’t try to get attention. He doesn’t particularly care if teachers like him. He doesn’t feel the need to be constantly praised. And therefore, he will never promote himself in the way a kid has to to earn his parent one of those flashy bumper stickers.

But you know what? He’s student of the month every month, as far as I’m concerned. And so is every child who has to work just a little harder than everyone else just to keep up, just to fit in.

So cheers to all of our unnamed students of the month!

My grandson complains about being AS a lot lately he is 12. I think we need a special recognition day for student of the month for him just for carrying his load with AS successfully everyday.
